Mr. Charalambous, you are assuming the critical position of Marina Director. We would like to begin by explaining to our readers the scope of your responsibilities. What does the day-to-day management of such a complex organization involve from an operational perspective?
The daily management of a modern marina is indeed multifaceted and requires a combination of operational precision, strategic thinking, and constant oversight. From an operational standpoint, my responsibilities extend across three main pillars.
First and foremost, the safe and uninterrupted operation of the marina. This includes supervision of port facilities, security systems, navigation within the marina basin, and ensuring full compliance with the applicable regulatory framework.
At the same time, daily operations—together with the coordination of human resources and relevant teams such as technical support and customer service—are of critical importance. This ensures that processes are carried out consistently, professionally, and at a high level of service for both berth holders and visitors.
In addition, the financial and operational sustainability of the marina is a key responsibility. This includes cost control, revenue optimization, management of contracts and partnerships, as well as planning maintenance and investments that safeguard the long-term value of the infrastructure.
More broadly, the role of the Marina Director requires a constant on-site presence, prompt decision-making, and a continuous balance between operational efficiency, safety, and a high-quality experience for everyone who uses the marina.
You are taking the helm at a time when the Marina has already been established as a multi-dimensional, year-round destination. What are your first impressions and your personal goal for this new term?
There are no “first impressions,” as I have already been part of the Ayia Napa Marina team, participating in the planning and implementation of its operational functions almost from the very beginning.
The Marina has evolved into a vibrant, year-round destination with a clear identity, a high level of services, and meaningful integration with both maritime activity and the broader local economy.
My personal goal for this new term is twofold. On one hand, to maintain and further strengthen the operational quality that has already been achieved—focusing on consistency, operational excellence, and safety. On the other hand, to evolve the marina in a sustainable and measurable way, ensuring that growth is not merely quantitative but substantial and long-term. I want the Marina to continue to serve as a point of reference not only for its facilities, but also for the way it is managed and developed.
What priorities have you set for 2026?
For 2026, we have established a clear and realistic framework of priorities, guided by stability, sustainable growth, and qualitative enhancement of the Marina.
Our primary priority is strengthening operational resilience and safety. This involves continuous upgrades to critical infrastructure, further improvement of operating procedures, and ongoing staff training, so that the Marina can respond seamlessly and consistently to both daily operations and emergency situations.
At the same time, upgrading the berthing and hospitality experience ranks high among our priorities. For 2026, we are focusing on improving services for both permanent and visiting users, digitizing key operations, and creating an environment that combines functionality, aesthetics, and a high level of service.
Equally important is financial discipline and targeted development. We aim for better utilization of existing resources, strengthening partnerships with strategic stakeholders, and planning investments that deliver clear added value to the Marina.
For 2026, we continue to place particular emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility. The adoption of environmentally friendly practices and alignment with international standards are no longer optional, but essential for a modern marina with a long-term vision.
How does your professional background and philosophy align with the Marina’s already successful team, enhancing the synergy that is the “magic ingredient” of its success?
I would like to note that my professional background to date has been in the technology sector, working as an information systems consultant for organizations. Through this role, I gained knowledge and a deep understanding of how organizations operate.
From experience, I firmly believe that the success of an organization is not built on individuals, but on teams that work with a shared purpose, clearly defined roles, and mutual respect.
Within this context, my philosophy naturally aligns with the Marina’s existing successful team. I am not here to change what already works, but to strengthen it, develop it, and provide the right tools for even better performance. I place particular emphasis on open communication, transparency, and decision-making based on both data and the experience of frontline staff.
My role is to create an environment in which every team member understands their contribution to the overall outcome, feels both responsibility and trust, and has room for professional growth. When there is a shared vision, clear direction, and a collaborative culture, success is not coincidental, but sustainable.
Ayia Napa Marina was designed as a “smart” marina. How does cutting-edge technology facilitate your team’s work and, by extension, enhance the experience of yacht owners?
Technology is a core pillar of the creation—and therefore the operation—of Ayia Napa Marina, rather than merely a supporting tool. Its design as a “smart” marina allows us to operate with greater accuracy, speed, and transparency, both in internal management and in the experience of yacht owners.
At an operational level, our digital systems facilitate the team’s daily work through centralized monitoring of berthing positions, energy and water consumption, and the management of maintenance and service requests. This translates into faster response times, better planning, and fewer operational errors.
For yacht owners, technology significantly enhances the berthing experience. Digital communication, real-time updates, and simplified procedures reduce bureaucracy and strengthen the sense of control and service. At the same time, advanced security and surveillance systems reinforce trust and protection for both vessels and infrastructure.
What are the technical capabilities, range of services, and safety protocols that ensure proper management and maintenance of vessels at the Marina’s Boatyard?
Our Boatyard features fully equipped areas for the safe hauling, storage, and launching of vessels. The facility has been designed in accordance with international standards. We use modern lifting equipment capable of handling vessels of up to 150 tons, along with support frames and secure fastening infrastructure that safely support vessels.
The Boatyard team consists of specialized professional technicians with experience across multiple vessel categories. We provide comprehensive maintenance, repair, inspection, and high-specification technical services.
Boatyard operations follow a strict work schedule and clearly defined safety protocols that minimize risks to both personnel and vessels, ensuring the high-quality execution of every task.
Yachting is an extremely demanding sector. What are the key strengths of Ayia Napa Marina that make it a leading destination in the Eastern Mediterranean, beyond its location?
The yachting sector is undoubtedly highly demanding and competitive, where owners’ and crews’ choices are based on far more than geographic location. Beyond its location, Ayia Napa Marina has several clear strengths that make it a top destination in the Eastern Mediterranean.
First and foremost is the quality of services and the human factor. The Marina’s team has experience, professionalism, and a strong service culture—qualities that are immediately recognized by owners, captains, and crews. In yachting, consistency and reliability are crucial, and here they are a true pillar of excellence.
Secondly, the level of infrastructure and technical specifications is key. The Marina was designed from the outset to accommodate modern and large vessels, offering safe berthing, reliable utility networks, and high operational standards that meet the needs of international yachting.
Equally important are safety, technological superiority, and stability in management and operations. Ayia Napa Marina offers an environment of trust, predictability, and quality—elements that in the world of yachting are not luxuries, but essential prerequisites.
How is service quality maintained at premium levels throughout the year, especially during the winter months when maintenance and storage needs change?
For Ayia Napa Marina, excellence in quality is a deliberate strategic choice, not a seasonal practice. Particularly during the winter months—when priorities shift from high traffic to maintenance, storage, and preventive care—our approach becomes even more targeted.
Consistency in quality is ensured through systematic planning and preventive management. Winter months are utilized for extensive infrastructure inspections, equipment maintenance, and process optimization, ensuring that the Marina remains fully operational and completely safe.
At the same time, special emphasis is placed on vessel security and technical supervision. Surveillance systems operate at full capacity, and our teams conduct regular inspections, ensuring that every vessel remains protected and in excellent condition, even when owners are absent.
Equally crucial is maintaining a stable and specialized workforce throughout the year. Quality cannot be seasonal; it requires people with knowledge, experience, and continuous training who understand the evolving needs of each period and respond professionally.
What is required to attract leisure vessels—and especially Superyachts—for long-term stays in Cyprus?
This requires a comprehensive and targeted mix of strategic actions, infrastructure, and services that go beyond the simple availability of berthing spaces.
First, high-specification infrastructure is essential. Superyachts require safe and spacious berths, reliable high-power electricity supply, access to water and fuel, and appropriate technical areas for maintenance and minor repairs.
Second, technology and security play a decisive role. Monitoring systems, 24/7 security services, and the ability for remote service management increase confidence among owners and crews.
Third, a top-tier service and hospitality experience is critical. Owners and crews seek specialized staff, personalized services, fast response to requests, and access to high-quality onshore activities, including entertainment and cultural experiences.
Fourth, tax and operational stability represents a competitive advantage. Transparency in legislation, competitive berthing fees, and the ability for long-term stays without bureaucratic obstacles strengthen Cyprus as a destination of choice for large vessels.
Finally, strategic promotion and international partnerships are key. Participation in international yachting exhibitions, collaboration with brokers, marinas, and tourism bodies, and the creation of a strong brand as a “smart and premium marina” enhance the attraction of high-profile vessels.
Overall, the combined strength of infrastructure, services, security, and strategic communication enables the attraction and retention of Superyachts in Cyprus with consistency and long-term sustainability.
Protecting the marine environment is inseparable from the operation of a modern marina. What is your plan for maintaining high environmental standards and the Marina’s Blue Flag status?
Protecting the marine environment is indeed a fundamental priority for any modern marina and an integral part of our sustainable operations strategy. Ayia Napa Marina, distinguished with the Blue Flag and certified as an ISO 13687-1 Yacht Harbour, is committed to the highest environmental standards. Our plan for 2026 focuses on three key pillars.
First, prevention and mitigation of environmental impact are of paramount importance. We emphasize proper waste management, recycling, and the rational use of energy and water. The installation of vessel waste collection and treatment systems, along with the use of environmentally friendly materials in infrastructure, reduces our environmental footprint.
At the same time, monitoring and quality assurance through regular inspections of water quality and marina infrastructure, combined with early-warning systems for potential environmental risks, ensure that operations always comply with Blue Flag requirements and international standards.
Equally important is the education and awareness of Marina staff and clients on marine environmental protection. This strengthens ecological awareness at all operational levels and is a critical tool for maintaining high standards.
Through this combination of prevention, monitoring, and education, we ensure that Ayia Napa Marina remains not only a premier yachting destination, but also a model of sustainable operation with respect for the marine environment.
In closing, how do you envision the evolution of Ayia Napa Marina’s operational capabilities by the end of 2026? What would personally define a successful year for you?
We are aiming for a future of continuous evolution for Ayia Napa Marina—a process of ongoing consolidation, optimization, and innovation—so that it is further established as a reference destination for yachting in the Eastern Mediterranean.
For me personally, the hallmark of a successful year would be the full balance between operational efficiency, high-quality services, and berth-holder satisfaction. In other words, a Marina that operates flawlessly, where visitors and yacht owners feel safe and well cared for, where staff work with confidence and synergy, and where Ayia Napa Marina continues to be a regional benchmark for reliability, innovation, and quality.
